Training can be dull, boring, and ineffective….
Is
yours? Or is it interesting, engaging, and powerful!
The
whole point of training is to either teach your team new skills, or refresh and
enhance their skills to bring them to a new level; additionally, getting them
pumped up and excited about it is a must.
So,
the first thing we need to ask is, what is it exactly that we want to achieve;
and then, lay all out on paper, with steps to achieve those goals.
Secondly,
and more importantly, what do you think is important to the team? You have to
find that connection, and really engage them if you want them to fully embrace
the concept and really understand what you're trying to teach them. Why should
they learn this? How will it improve their lives? In other words, “what’s in it
for me?” If they're just sitting in a classroom staring out of the window and
dreaming of being on the beach in the Bahamas, then you have lost the group,
and there's really no point in doing the training. They have to leave pumped
up, engaged, and excited! Your outline should be created with this in mind.
When you are done with your presentation, look at it from this standpoint and
if it does not achieve it, then redo it.
The
next part of course, is the follow-up, it has to be planned out as well. What
you teach and preach in a classroom is all well and good, but what happens in
reality when they go back to work and start putting it into practice? It
must be fully supported by you and your teams. They need to see that you really
believe in it, and will support them in trying to put into place what you just
sold them on. Following up on a consistent basis, recognizing when they do
well, acknowledging them for it, and removing any barriers: and when they don't
use the new skills, that you notice, prompt, and coach them.
All in
all, very simple statements. However, very important to keep in mind as they
tend to get missed - a lot! The result is dull, boring and ineffective
training.
